Spider Plant Propagation
1. Propagation by Spiderettes
The easiest and most effective way to propagate spider plants is by using spiderettes. Spiderettes are tiny baby plants that sprout from long stems of the spider plant. These mini-replicas are identical to the mother plant and have roots or nodes, making propagation easy. Place the spiderette into a container with water. Make sure the roots are submerged, but that the leaves remain above water level. The spiderettes are able to establish quickly in water or soil because they already have roots.
2. Propagation by Division
It is easy and efficient to propagate new spider plants by division. This technique involves breaking up the roots of a spider plant to create smaller sections. Each section will have its own leaves and roots. Remove the spider plant from the pot and gently shake off the excess soil. This will expose the roots. Divide the root ball using a clean, sharp knife or with your hands. Make sure each piece has healthy foliage and roots. Replant each section in a pot with fresh soil that drains well. Place in an area with indirect, bright light for best growth.
